The Lee County girls and Bruton boys won state Class 2 championships when the Class 1 and 2 track meets were held at James Madison University in Harrisonburg on Friday and Saturday of last week. The James River girls finished 12th among 37 Class 2 schools that scored.
Lee County finished with 71.5 points to outscore second place Liberty, who had 66. The Bruton boys had 59 points to 53.3 for runner-up Floyd County.
River’s best finish was a fourth in the triple jump by Navaeh VanBuren, who hopped, skipped and jumped 36’ 0.75”. Navaeh also was fifth in the long jump at 16’4”.
Kelsey Firebaugh scored in the 100-meter dash with a sixth place, running 12.99 in the finals after going 12.74 in the preliminaries. Emma Bobbitt was fifth in the discus with a toss of 113’2” and ninth in the shot put. Drew Whitson was seventh in the 1,600 and ninth in the 800.
The boys did not score in the state meet. Their best finish was a ninth in the shot put by Jayden Alston.
