The James River girls basketball team will wrap up the regular season this week, then open the Three Rivers District tournament on Friday at Floyd County.
The girls played host to Carroll on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication. The Knights took a 2-17 record into that game after falling to a strong Floyd County team in Springwood Monday, 72-22.
“What can I say, Floyd is a very good team that competes with LB and William Fleming and holds their own against them,” said River coach E.D. Schechterly. “We held our own with them for the first four or five minutes, going basket to basket with them, and then we ran out of gas real fast.”
Floyd outscored the Knights 32-2 over the middle two periods, 16-0 in the second quarter and 16-2 in the third.
River’s Last week the girls dropped back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday at home the girls fell to Radford, 45-31.
“We were in the game until the fourth quarter,” said Schechterly. “Our girls played hard all through the game.”
Madison Brogan had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
On Friday in Riner the girls dropped a 63-47 decision to Auburn. There were a total of 54 fouls called in this game, 23 on River and 31 on Auburn. River’s poor foul shooting hurt as the Knights made just 21 of 40.
“I guess we were still on the bus during the first quarter,” said Schechterly. “After that it was an uphill climb and it seemed the hill got longer, but all of our players played hard while in the game. We told the girls that we were very proud of them for not giving up and working hard.”
Kahliyal Davis had 10 points and five rebounds and Madison Brogan had 11 rebounds.
