It was a big week on the oval last week as William Fleming played host to the annual Cosmopolitan Club track meet. Lord Botetourt also sent some athletes to the Dogwood Classic, a highly competitive meet in Charlottesville.

The “Cosmo” had divisions for Middle School, Juniors (9th and 10th grade) and Seniors (11th and 12th) and was held over three days in Roanoke. The Pulaski boys and Roanoke Catholic girls won Senior Division titles, the Northside boys and Blacksburg girls took the Junior Division and the Andrew Lewis boys and Blacksburg girls won Middle School titles.

James River finished sixth among the Senior girls and sixth among the Junior boys. Navaeh VanBuren won the long and triple jumps and was third in the discus. She was named the Senior Most Valuable Field Performer after winning that award in the Junior Division last year. Kelsey Firebaugh was fourth in the 100 and 200 in the Senior Division and Emma Bobbitt was third in the shot and fourth in the discus. River was sixth with just three girls in the Senior Division.

In the Junior Division Gavin Binns was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200 while Jayden Alston took second in the discus and fourth in the shot. Kaia Binns was third in the 200 and fourth in the 100 for the girls.

For LB, Olivia Gantzhorn was third in the discus and Alicia Holmes was fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump for the girls. Madeleine Gantzhorn was fourth in the 400.

For the boys, Chris Paderick took a first in the long jump and Nathan Mullens was second. Taygen Sanchez-Huerta was second in the shot.

LB is at a meet at William Byrd on Thursday while River will be at Patrick County today. Both LB and River are headed to the Blue Demon Invitational in Christiansburg Saturday.
