The boys came in as the eighth seed and played host to ninth seeded Giles on Monday in Springwood. River scored a decisive win with a 6-0 shutout of the visiting Spartans.
“We played solid again tonight,” said coach Jared Whiting. “We moved the ball well and had some great finishes. Our defense kept all shots out of the box and our midfield dominated ball control. We have put two games together well and will need do it again against Glenvar. Back-to-back games are tough but I think these guys can step up for it.”
Monday against Giles, Chase Powell and Elias Wentworth had two goals each for the Knights while Levi Miller and Chase Cuddy had one each. Justin Hill had two assists and Wentworth, Miller and Powell had one each.
The girls are the number three seed in the region and they didn’t have to play Monday. If the Knights won Tuesday they would advance to a region semifinal game Thursday against the winner of a first round game between second seeded Radford and seventh seeded Giles. If Radford won that game they would be home, but if Giles pulled an upset and River also won, then the Knights would be home for that game. Appomattox is the top seed in the tournament.
The Knights finished up the regular season last week with a 6-1win over Giles to end the regular season at 8-1-1. Kayla Myers and Myla Lester had two goals each for the Knights while Haley Meadows had four saves in the goal.
The Region 2C championship for both the boys and girls will Saturday at the sites of the highest remaining seeds. The Region 2C winner advances to the state semifinal round next Tuesday, June 22.
