The James River soccer teams will host a boys-girls doubleheader tonight in Springwood. The boys will open the twin bill at 5:30 p.m., followed by the girls’ game at approximately 7 p.m.
Both teams are coming off road wins. The boys beat Carroll County in Hillsville last week in a close one, 2-1.
“We started out a little sluggish but picked up the pace as the game went on,” said boys coach Jared Whiting. “We were making some mental mistakes early but corrected them and settled into some sound soccer.”
Justin Hill got the scoring started for River off an assist from Chase Powell. Then Craig Bowyer scored what turned out to be the decisive goal off an assist from Chase Cuddy.
“I’m proud of the effort these guys put into the game,” said Whiting. “They all worked hard the entire 80 minutes of play.”
The girls played at Floyd on Monday and took a convincing 10-0 win after a slow start. Rachael Hix started the scoring, finishing a corner kick at the 20-minute mark of the first half. Morgan Marshall finished from an Ella Wright assist shortly after.
Kaylyn Bryant got the first of her three goals for the night, unassisted, bringing the game to 3-0 at the 22-minute mark. Myla Lester followed with the first of her two, both unassisted, before the break.
Ella Wright converted two early in the second half assisted by Marshall and Bridgette West. Bryant finished a West corner, then converted a free kick just over 10 minutes into the half. Haley Harris finished off the scoring with four minutes remaining in the 60-minute game.
Haley Meadows had an easy time in the James River goal with no saves required.
