James River High School (JRHS) conducted its annual Day of Service last Wednesday, in which students visited different sites around the local area to perform community service.

Approximately 150 James River students participated this year. Students provided services for a number of local schools and organizations that included Breckinridge Elementary School, Buchanan Elementary            School, Buchanan Carnival Grounds, Buchanan Library, Eagle Rock Elementary School, James River High School, Limestone Park, New Freedom Farm, Amsterdam Cemetery (Sirens & Salutes), and Solomon’s Mission.

“One of our school’s mottos is that ‘We’re worth the drive,’” James River Principal Dr. Lisa Taylor said when asked about the Day of Service. “And nowhere is that more evident than in the incredible spirit of service our students demonstrated during our annual Day of Service. Each year, I am deeply inspired by how our young people continue to make a genuine difference, not just within our school walls, but throughout our community.”

This year, the JRHS Teacher Leadership Team and Student Senate members collaborated to plan the Day of Service, creating opportunities for juniors and seniors to step out into the community and give back.

“Community service embodies many of the values we cherish as Knights: leadership, empathy, hard work, kindness, dedication, and a deep commitment to making our corner of the world a better place,” Taylor continued. “Community service is a blessing that reminds us every year why we’re so proud to call Botetourt home.

“As principal, there is no greater joy than watching our students grow, not only in knowledge, but also in character. Their service is a shining example of why James River High School and the community we call home will always be truly worth the drive.”
