James River High School will be the site of a seven-school volleyball invitational in Springwood Saturday. Matches begin at 9 a.m. and schools involved are Alleghany, Bath County, Franklin County, Heritage, Parry McCluer, Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy and the host Knights.

River will open at 9 a.m. with a match against Heritage. The Knights will also take on Bath County at 10 a.m., Franklin County at 11 a.m. and SMLCA at 1:45 p.m. Each school will play four times.

The Knights are 7-2 coming into the week after splitting two Three Rivers District matches last week. They traveled to Glenvar on September 16 for a match between two traditional Class 2 powers. Glenvar came out on top this time in three sets, 25-14, 25-13 and 25-19.

“We made way too many errors to be able to compete,” said River coach Linsey Firebaugh.

Last Thursday the Knights bounced back with a win at Martinsville High in three. The Knights dominated the Bulldogs, who joined the Three Rivers just this season, by scores of 25-13, 25-9 and 25-13.

“Serving won us the game,” said Firebaugh. “The girls kept their serve in and served aggressively to overpower Martinsville.”

River has another busy week. Before hosting the invitational on Saturday the Knights were scheduled to visit Floyd County on Tuesday and host Patrick County on Thursday in district matches.
