The James River wrestlers finished in fifth place despite covering just eight weight classes in the Blues Invitational tournament at Parry McCluer High School last weekend.
River wrestlers won three classes, including the 120-pound class where junior Brayden Forbes was named the Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler in the tournament. Also winning their weight classes were junior Xaiden Wynn at 106 and sophomore Nate Stewart at 138.
Sophomore Jayden Alston took a second place at 190 for the Knights. Third places went to freshmen Caiden Martin at 106 and Efraim Echavarria at 144. Sophomores Silas Whitson and Xander Carlough took fourth at 106 and 126.
Brookville was the team winner among 10 schools competing. Buffalo Gap was second, followed by host Parry McCluer, Amherst County and James River.
The Knights had been scheduled to wrestle in the Appomattox tournament this weekend but that has been cancelled. Georgia Miller, River’s lone female on the team, will wrestle in a tournament in Louisa County.
“Georgia put in some work over the summer and is eager to compete and see the results,” said River coach Bobby Stewart. “She has grown a love for the sport and we can see it.”
