The James River boys finished fifth as a team in the Region 2C cross country meet at Green Hill Park last week. The Alleghany boys and girls swept the team titles.
Michael Jorgensen was River’s top runner, finishing 19th overall and qualifying for the Class 2 state meet at Green Hill Park this Saturday. Green Hill will host the Class 1, 2 and 3 state meets and Jorgensen will run at 1:45 p.m. in the boys Class 2 meet.
Last week at Green Hill, Jorgensen ran a personal record time of 18:53. Michael broke his foot at the beginning of the season and missed two months, only running in two meets before the regional meet.
Silas Miller was River’s next finisher, running his second best time of the season in 19:19. Silas also missed a lot of practices because he spent the majority of time practicing with the band.
Jacob Hill finished third for the team, running a personal record time of 19:37. Jacob ran the last two miles of the race barefooted after both of his shoes came off.
Cayden Shorter finished in fourth place for River in his second best time of the season at 19:42. Cayden, who is also on the football team, ran a total of six miles in races before the regional meet. He did not get to practice with the team because of football.
“Both Silas’s and Cayden’s times this season were amazing,” said River coach Butch Lewis.
The fifth and final scorer for River was Nathan Etzler. Nathan is the captain of the boys team and was not able to practice for the last month of the season because of a knee injury. The sixth place finisher was Wyatt Race-Waller.
River only had one girl, Victoria Race-Waller, run this year. She finished in 25th place with a personal record time of 23:54.
“Both Coach Divers and I are very proud of this year’s team that fought through a lot of adversity to finish a very respectable fifth place in the regional meet,” said Lewis.
