James W. (Jimmy) Johnson, 83, passed away on September 20, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carroll Thomas Johnson and Wayne Mildred Martin Johnson; sister, Rheta Crowder (Herbert); sister-in-law, Marlene Grisso (Charlie); and brother-in-law, Emmanuel Spickard.
Jimmy was born September 14, 1940 in Fincastle. He graduated with the first graduating class of Lord Botetourt High School. In 1961, upon receiving his welding certificate in Chicago, he returned to his family farm to work full time as a third generation Botetourt County dairy farmer. He later transitioned to Black Angus beef production during his “retirement years.” A resourceful and hardworking farmer, he loved early rising, the outdoors, and hunting. He was a mentor to many local and future farmers, including his grandson Jack. He always said that farming was both his hobby and his livelihood.
He recently celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife, Joyce Bowman Johnson, the love of his life. He is survived by his dearly loved family: daughter, Kristi Berry (Alan); grandchildren, Jack and Kaeli Berry; sister, Carolyn Sue Spickard; nieces and nephews, David Crowder, Suzanne Calvert, Greg Spickard, Keith Spickard, Angie Spickard Reo, Cindy Grisso, Connie Grisso, Greg Grisso, and their extended families.
We want to thank the many family, friends, and neighbors who visited Jimmy through his illness, lifting his spirits on a continual basis. We also want to thank Ellis Senior Care, Alleghany Health and Rehab, and Glenda (Jimmy’s nursing “angel”) for providing him with such wonderful care.
On Saturday, September 30, the family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home (630 Roanoke Road, Daleville). The funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Danny Quirin officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Flowers are appreciated, or donations can be made in Jimmy’s memory to the “Gardens of Grace” at Wheatland Lutheran Church (P.O. Box 34, Daleville, 24083-0034) or to the Mill Creek Baptist Youth Group (11475 Lee Highway, Fincastle, 24090).
