The James River girls will celebrate “Senior Night” when they play host to Carroll County in a Three Rivers District soccer game Thursday night in Springwood.
The Knights come into the game at 8-4 overall and 5-2 in the Three Rivers District after Floyd County forfeited Monday’s scheduled game. Last week River went 2-1, beating Alleghany and Giles around a loss to Radford.
River eased by Alleghany, 9-1. Olivia Baker had a three-goal hat trick for River.
On Thursday at Radford the Knights were shut out, 1-0, as the girls were forced to play more defense than usual early in the match.
Radford came out strong, led by sisters Madison and Makenzie Page. A heated 15 minutes finally resulted in a goal for the home Bobcats. Madison Page got the goal on a strong outside shot, assisted by Sadie Hurst. This turned out to be the only goal of the game.
James River turned the flow of play in what was a more balanced match for the remaining hour of play. Attacks were made by each team, but the Knights were not able to deliver.
James River keeper Colleen Peery had nine saves in the match, keeping the match close with some tough stops.
On Friday at Giles the Knights bounced back with a 7-3 win. Kaitlyn McClung started the scoring with an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the game. Emma Butler scored off an assist from Meaghan Hix three minutes later. McClung followed with another goal from Butler’s assist to make the score 3-0 at the midpoint of the half. Second half goals were scored by Rachelle Hix, Morgan Bryan and Riley Potter, and River also benefited from an “own goal” compliments of the Spartans.
The girls will host Glenvar on Friday.
