Two James River sophomores competed in the Class 2 state golf tournament Monday at the Great Oaks course in Floyd County and both fared well. Landon Bolling was 11th and Mason Gilliland placed 17th.
The two were just one stroke apart with Bolling carding an 80 and Gilliland coming in at 81. McCartney Hinkle of Graham High was the state champion with a one-over-par 73 and Floyd County, a member of the Three Rivers District, was the team champion with a score of 315.
“Both golfers are hungry for state titles,” said James River coach Donna Cox. “I know they will continue to work on their game to chase down that dream.
“The future of James River golf is so bright. Three sophomores and one freshman made up our starting line-up this year. We will add into the mix another freshman next year, so the sky’s the limit.”
Lord Botetourt made the Class 3 state tournament as a team. The Cavaliers were scheduled to play Tuesday at the Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.
