The James River baseball team had a wild run last week, playing three close games against Three River District opponents.
River opened with a 1-0 win over Alleghany in 10 innings in Springwood. Jake Braun went seven shutout innings on the mound but didn’t get a decision. Kevin Theimer pitched three no-hit inning and got the win.
“This was great pitching by these two young pitchers,” said coach Harry Falls. “They managed to keep Allegheny off balance the whole game.”
River scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 10th. Michael Taylor led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on Dyllan McAlllister’s one-out single to right. Taylor then scored on a wild pitch to end the game. Braun, McAllister and Ethan Loving each had 2 hits.
A day later, also at home, Floyd County visited and took a 4-3 win in River’s home finale. The six seniors were honored prior to the game, Dalton Harper, Kavin Vest, Taylor, Braun, Loving and Cameron Hall.
Dyllan McAllister started on the mound and went five innings, allowing four hits and three runs. Gabe Sebastino came on for the final two frames.
River led 2-0, scoring a run each in the third and fourth innings, but Floyd took the lead with three in the top of the fifth. River tied the game in the bottom of fifth but Floyd scored one in top of the sixth and held on for the win
Braun went 3-for-4 while Sebastino, Vest and Ethan Loving had two hits apiece.
On Friday the Knights played at Radford and won a wild one, 12-10. A total of eight pitchers, four for each team, saw time on the mound. Kevin Theimer got the win and Andrew Bridges picked up a save.
River was down 5-1 after five innings but rallied to score 10 runs in the top of the sixth, sending 14 batters to the plate. McAllister’s three-run homer was the highlight.
“This turned out to be good week for us, getting two big wins against good teams,” said Falls.
The Knights are at Carroll County Friday for their final regular season game.
