The James River and Lord Botetourt swim teams will go head to head in the pool on Thursday night at the Botetourt Family YMCA. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
This will be the first action for the Lord Botetourt team. The Cavaliers had a meet with Staunton River postponed last week and another meet with William Byrd cancelled.
“I am in contact with a few other area teams to see if I can schedule more meets,” said LB coach Ashley Safrit. “Roanoke County schools are only allowed to swim ROCO schools, and Alleghany has not even been allowed to get in the pool yet. I am unsure when Staunton River will be able to reschedule, and we are waiting to hear about Salem schools.”
James River opened the season last week with a home meet against Carroll County in Daleville. The River boys and girls teams had strong performances but came up short of a win.
The girls Medley Relay team of Ellie Holter, Norah Jones, Sydney Wilson and Kaylee Cox won their event. Holter won the 500 Free and Wilson won the 200 IM.
Freshman swimmer Drew Whitson finished second in the 200 Free and 100 Breaststroke. Senior Riley Potter finished third as a first time swimmer in the 50 Freestyle. Eighth grade swimmer Addie Jones competed in the 50 Free and 100 Backstroke while Mackenzie Alford placed third in the 200 Free and 100 Backstroke. The final score in the girls meet was Carroll County 65 and River 61.
The boys side of the meet also had some strong performances. The Medley Relay team of Nathan Etzler, Isaac Bell, Walker Wilson, and Cameron Rogers finished second in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay. Etzler would go on to win the 50 Free and 100 Backstroke later in the meet and Bell would finish second in the 100 Free.
Freshman Wilson took second in the 100 Fly and 500 Free with personal best times. First time senior swimmer Rogers placed fifth in the 50 Free but Carroll took the win, 72-33.
After the meet with LB Thursday the Knight are tentatively scheduled to swim at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center this Saturday.
