Visiting Alleghany managed to scratch out three runs against James River and that was enough for a 3-1 win in the Region 2C baseball quarterfinal last Saturday night in Springwood.
Heath Andrews pitched five innings for River and allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out seven. Jonas Wilkes pitched the last two innings and gave up one run while not allowing a hit and walking two.
River had just four hits, two by Hunter Mays and one each by Colin Cook and John Austin. Zeal Hammons had an RBI while Austin scored River’s only run. The loss ended River’s season at 13-8.
“This season has been a great season for these young men,” said River coach Matt Gouker. “They have worked tirelessly to improve and set a new standard for James River baseball. We had multiple impact players this season, ranging from upperclassmen to underclassmen, which helped us be successful this season and move into hopefully another successful season next year.”
