The James River boys will take on Martinsville today in the semifinals of the Conference 38 soccer tournament. The game will be held at the Smith River Complex in Martinsville.
The conference tournament opened Monday with a play-in game as Floyd County beat Glenvar, 2-0. Floyd advances to a game with Giles today at 5:30 p.m. in Martinsville, the first game of a doubleheader with the River game.
The Conference 38 championship will be Thursday at the Smith River Complex. It’s scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and is the second game of a doubleheader with the girls.
River is 10-4 after splitting two games last week to end the regular season. The Knights lost at Giles, 3-1, on Wednesday. Tyler Whiting had the River goal.
“We played very well against Giles,” said River coach Jared Whiting. “I feel we outplayed them but didn’t outscore them. Luck just was not on our side. I hope to play Giles again in the playoffs and am really looking forward to it.”
On Friday the Knights concluded the regular season with a 4-0 win over Glenvar in Springwood. Tristan Flood had three goals, Tyler Whiting had the other and Ben Woody had two assists. Tyler Meadows had the shutout in goal.
“We worked the ball well and pressured defensively in all thirds of the field,” said coach Whiting. “The consistency that we have been looking for seems to have arrived and that is so vital as we begin conference playoffs.”
