Knights take 3rd, 5th regional finishes into state track meet

James River’s Will Miller (1) and teammate Will Fowler (5) race at the start of the 1600 m event. Miller would win in a time of 4:31.47, with Fowler in sixth place with a time of 4:50.92.
James River’s Susan Schulz placed 5th in the high jump (4-08) at the 2A West Region meet.

The James River girls were third and the boys took fifth in the Group 2A West track meet at Radford University last week. The Giles girls and Appomattox County boys were team winners.

For the girls, River’s 4×400 relay team took first place at 4:25.37 with the foursome of Lauren Ogle, Kaitlyn Wiley, Kerri Wiley and Grace Montgomery. Ogle had a big day, as she also was first in the 300 hurdles at 46.03, second in the 100, second in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.

Kaitlyn Wiley was second in the 300 hurdles and eighth in the triple jump. She also ran on the second place 4×800 meter relay team with Abigail Link, Montgomery and Brenna Alls.

Montgomery, a freshman, was sixth in the 800 and seventh in the 1600. River also got points with a fifth in the high jump from Susan Schulz and a sixth in the shot put from Tara Krantz.

For the boys, the 4×800 team of Will Miller, Will Fowler, Noel Preece and Daniel Holter took first place with a time of 8:41.55. Miller was also first in the 1600 at 4:31.47 and Fowler took sixth. Fowler was also fourth in the 800.

Ian Hester won the 300 hurdles for River with a time of 41.84. Others who scored included Preece with a fifth in the 3200, Michael Hayes with a seventh in the 400 and Cameron Dennis and Darius Cheatwood placed sixth and seventh in the shot put.

The Knights who finished sixth or better advance to the state meet this weekend at East Rockingham High School.
