The James River boys will open the Three Rivers District tournament at home Friday against an opponent to be determined. The Knights are the fourth seed in the district tournament.
River was 11-9 overall coming into the week. The Knights have a home-and-home series with Carroll County this week, with a home game Tuesday and a trip to Carroll on Wednesday. Both are scheduled girls-boys doubleheaders.
All 13 teams in Region 2C will be competing in a tournament next week. The Knights are in the middle of the pack but playing well as the post-season nears.
Last Friday River beat Floyd at home for “Senior Night,” 61-55. Darious Cheatwood made it a big night with 27 points to lead the team. Walker Andrews had 11 points, Jacob Wagner had nine points and 10 rebounds and Kent Clark had eight points.
Last Wednesday in Radford the Knights lost to the undefeated Bobcats, 66-54. Cheatwood had 27 again and River Clonch had a dozen points. River was down just six at one point of the fourth quarter.
“They just have so much speed and quickness,” said River coach Mike Goad. “You have to catch them on a bad shooting night, and that’s hard to do because they can all put the ball in the basket.”
River also beat Buffalo Gap at home last week, 59-34. Cheatwood had 16 and Andrews had a dozen.
