The James River Knights will host Glenvar in a key Three Rivers District baseball game on Friday in Springwood at 5 p.m. River was scheduled to host Floyd County on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication.
“As we start district play this week, our coaching staff is excited to see how this team will continue the success that we have seen,” said coach Matt Gouker. “We’ve played some good opponents in the first part of the season and have come away with five wins.”
The Knights hosted Northside in a non-district game last Friday and dropped a 6-2 decision to the Class 3 Vikings. River took an early lead when Dalton Hall was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run. However, Northside pitcher Benjamin Phillips struck out 10 in a complete game effort as the Vikings rallied for the win.
Jonas Wilkes led River with two hits. Heath Andrews took the loss despite giving up just one earned run and three hits in four and a third innings of work. Heath struck out seven and walked just one.
“Our team has done well in many situations and is excited to be playing together,” said Gouker. “Our team chemistry is one key to our success thus far. We have many guys performing in different roles and have embraced the value of the team.”
