The Lord Botetourt girls came out of the chute running with two convincing wins in their first two basketball games of the season.

The Cavaliers dominated Alleghany and Hidden Valley despite having many team members still transitioning from volleyball to basketball after winning the state volleyball championship on November 18.

Botetourt opened at home against Alleghany last Tuesday, Nov. 28, and took a 48-17 win. Botetourt led 31-2 at the half.

“It was a typical first game for both teams,” said LB coach Chuck Pound. “It took us a while to get going. We have five volleyball players who were on just their seventh day of basketball.”

One of them, Brooklyn Shelton, lit up for 20 points and another, Miette Veldman, had six steals. Grace Taylor was four of five on three-pointers.

On Thursday the girls were back at home to host Hidden Valley, winning 63-43. Jenna Alam led the offense with 23 points, shooting 50 percent from the field. Alam also had 10 steals.

“We played well in spurts,” said Pound. “We’ve talked a lot about consistency in performance, execution and effort, and that is what can take us a long way.”

Shelton had another good game with 17 points. Veldman filled up the stat sheet with a dozen points, 11 rebounds, six assists and six steals.

“We have a lot of work to do, including which combinations work the best,” said Pound.

The Cavaliers will host Franklin County tonight. Then they’ll return the trip to Alleghany Friday, followed by a home game with Salem on Monday.
