The Lord Botetourt soccer teams will play their final games before spring break this week as the Cavaliers take on Franklin County. The boys will be home to host the Eagles on Thursday and the girls will be in Rocky Mount for a Friday game.
Last week the boys split two games, losing to Northside, 4-0, but bouncing back for a 3-2 double overtime win over William Fleming. The Cavs trailed 1-0 at the half against the Vikings, but the Vikings came out strong and put three goals on the board in the second half to down LB in Daleville.
“Coming out in the second half we allowed a rebound opportunity and the Vikings capitalized, and after that it was all down hill,” said coach Tim Wright. “I have accumulated five to six hours of watching and re-watching this particular game film. Throughout the game a number of defensive deficiencies were exposed. That is a good thing as that is what we will discuss, that is what we will look at, and that is what we will train on moving forward.”
On Thursday the Cavaliers bounced back with an exciting 3-2 double overtime win against William Fleming. By the end of the first half the score was 1-1 as LB’s Ethan Hogan tied the game up off a throw-in.
The second half went scoreless, sending the match into overtime. It was in the second five-minute overtime when LB took the lead with a 40-yard goal scored by Matt Smith. About a minute later Fleming responded with a goal to tie it at 2.
In the final minute, outside back Nathan Rich crept up to the opponent’s 18 and cranked a loose ball that found the net and proved to be the game winner.
“It’s always exciting for the guys to win like this, especially coming off a hard loss as we did,” said Wright. “I thought our defensive line looked more organized and the effort level was impressive from the first whistle to the last.”
The win lifted the Cavaliers to 3-1 on the season. They were at Alleghany Tuesday.
The LB girls remained undefeated at 4-0 with two wins last week. They took a 6-1 win at Northside as five different girls scored. Sara Bane had two goals, one with an assist from Hannah Bane and a second with an assist from Alexis Borovich.
Hannah Leonard scored the first goal with an assist from Sara Bane and Hannah Bane has a goal with Mackenzie Collins assisting. Collins also had a goal, with Hannah Bane assisting, and Hallie Catron scored off Hannah Bane’s throw in.
Alex Heck and Olivia Assenat split time in goal. Heck had three saves in the first half and Assenat had four after intermission.
On Thursday LB buried Fleming, 10-0, in Daleville. The girls were scheduled to host Alleghany on Tuesday of this week.
