The James River girls picked up their first win of the season when the Knights defeated Nelson County in Springwood last week, 37-36.
Brittany Crawford hit a 10-foot jump shot with 20 seconds remaining to give the Knights the win. The Governors missed their last three shots as River played tight defense down the stretch.
“We played well,” said River coach E.D. Schechterly. “We got the ball out quickly and got down the floor.”
Sisters Lakota and Lacey Lucado led James River with nine points each. Crawford finished with six and Kahliyan Davis also had six points for the Knights.
River improved to 1-3 and the Knights were scheduled to host Covington on Tuesday. On Thursday the girls are at Rockbridge, then they take a couple weeks off for Christmas.
“It’s going to really help their confidence to win that game,” said Schechterly. “I told them if they keep playing like that there’s going to be a lot more wins to come.”
