Monday was opening day for the Lord Botetourt baseball team and the Cavaliers made it a good one with a win. LB defeated visiting Pulaski County in Daleville, 6-3.
Garrett Lonker got the nod to open the season on the mound and picked up the win. He went four innings, fanning seven and allowing just three hits. Ethan Taylor pitched two one-hit innings, striking out three, and Kobe Hairston picked up the save. Offensively, Jairden Pennix had two hits and drove in two runs.
“It was great to get that first win against a good Pulaski team,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “The rest of the week is going to be tough as well.”
The Cavaliers were scheduled to play at Blacksburg on Tuesday followed by a home game against Hidden Valley Thursday.
“We open with two state semifinalists from last year in Pulaski and Blacksburg,” said Smith. “Throw in an older Hidden Valley and James River team, and state tournament Salem team, our non-district schedule is going to be tough.”
