Lord Botetourt was still alive in the Region 3D soccer tournament as the paper went to press this week. The Cavaliers were scheduled to play Staunton River on Tuesday night at Cave Spring High School.
The other region semifinal had host Northside against Magna Vista, and the winners will play Friday at Cave Spring at 6 p.m. for the region championship. Both regional finalists advance to the state tournament.
LB opened region play with a 3-0 win over Patrick County in Daleville last Thursday. Zach Durham got things started with an early goal in the first half.
“Durham was moved from a center back to a winger, a move that I feel acted as a catalyst for our offensive game,” said coach Tim Wright. “Never would I have expected to make such a move so late in the season but with how things have been going something needed to change. He plays attacking positions for his travel club, and as I went back and watched film from practice the day before I kept trying to fight the decision to move him. I am glad I gave in to the fight!”
In the second half, Matt Smith scored off a header from a throw-in by Coleman Osborne and Trey Rice hit an open field shot outside the box. Collin Ewers recorded his fifth shutout for the season.
