The Lord Botetourt football team is 2-0 as the Cavaliers take a week off this Friday. Due to their early start LB will have two byes this season.

The Cavaliers are off to a good start. After opening the season a week early with a 49-12 win over Rye Cove, the Cavs made it two in a row last Friday, beating Rustburg on the road, 28-14.

The game wasn’t as close as the score indicates. LB was on the verge of a shutout with a 28-0 lead and just a minute and a half remaining in the game. However, Rustburg scored, recovered an onside kick and scored again to pull within 14 points in the closing seconds.

“We dominated the line of scrimmage,” said LB coach Jamie Harless. “I think their longest run of the night was five yards.”

The Cavaliers jumped on top early with 13 first quarter points. Angel Rigney scored on a five-yard run and Hudson Cummings converted the extra point. Then Quinten Jones ran one in from eight yards. The extra point attempt failed but the Cavaliers had a lead they would not relinquish.

After a scoreless second quarter Rigney struck again, running for a five-yard TD in the third quarter and adding a two-point extra. Angel added a third score, this time on a five-yard run early in the fourth quarter and Cummings kicked the point for the 28-0 lead.

Rigney finished with 122 yards rushing on 21 attempts and Jones had 168 yards on 28 carries as LB piled up 287 yards on the ground. Angel was six for 10 passing for 107 yards, including four to Jones for 79 yards. Eric Irons and Rylen Wright had one reception each.

The Cavs now have a week off before their home opener against Altavista on Friday, September 12. They’ll have the same schedule next season, and Harless is a proponent of two byes for the high school season.

“It’s a long season for high school kids and I’ve been pushing to start early, and have two byes, for several years,” he said. “I like having a bye this week. We’re still missing two two-way starters and trying to get all our guys on the field.”
