The Lord Botetourt girls will take a 6-0 record to Tennessee this week to play in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic in Gatlinburg. It will be the second year in a row the girls are in the tournament and they’ll play in the “Yellow Bracket” of the big holiday event.
The Cavaliers will open play Thursday at 4 p.m. against Station Camp High of Tennessee. The tournament runs for three days and other schools in the Yellow Bracket include Liberty Creek of Tennessee, Summerville of South Carolina, Lanier Christian of Georgia and three Kentucky high schools, Lafayette, Jackson County and Hopkins County Central. All eight teams are guaranteed three games with games for the championship, third place, fifth place and seventh place on Saturday. Games will be played at several locations in Gatlinburg.
The Cavs are heading to Tennessee on a roll, having played four games in six days and winning all four. The streak started with a 35-28 win over Spotswood in Daleville on December 10. Maddie Caron had 14 points and eight rebounds.
A night later the girls played in Blacksburg and took a 60-48 win as Madilyn Winterton had 24 points, Caron had 19 and Abby Kingery had a dozen.
After a day off the Cavaliers hosted Turner Ashby on Friday and won 44-33. Winterton had 20 points and Maggie Hoover had 10 points and nine rebounds.
“Great matchup against a very well-coached and disciplined team,” said LB coach Renee Favaro.
On Monday of this week the Cavs played E.C. Glass in Lynchburg and hammered the Hilltoppers, 80-40. Winterton had 26 points, 10 assists and eight steals while Caron had a career-high 25 points, hitting 12 of 14 shots. Hoover had 14 and all eight girls scored.
“Super proud of this group and their cohesiveness,” said Favaro. “We’ve played a strong schedule and are 6-0. Looking forward to going to Tennessee to face some more strong competition.”
