On Monday the Lord Botetourt volleyball team began their season just like they ended the previous one, with a win, while James River was set to open Tuesday. Lord Botetourt defeated Jefferson Forest in three sets Monday, 25-17, 25-7 and 25-18, in Daleville.
It was the Cavaliers 32nd straight win after going 31-0 and winning the state Class 3 championship last year. Miette Veldman, the 2017 Class 3 Player of the Year, was in mid-season form with 15 kills and six digs to go along with three serving aces. Scottie Cook had 10 kills and Jordyn Kepler dished out 31 assists in the win.
The Cavaliers have a busy week to open the season. They were at Cave Spring on Tuesday and on Thursday they travel to Salem to take on the Spartans. Next Tuesday, August 28, they play host to Blacksburg. The Bruins were one of just two teams to take LB to more than three sets last year. “I’m sure they’ll be up for us,” said LB coach Julie Conner. “We have a target on our backs this year.” James River, the other school to take LB to more than three sets last year, was set to open Tuesday at home against Covington.
Next week the Knights are at Parry McCluer on Monday and back home to host Carroll County on Tuesday. Don’t miss a preview of both teams included in the special Fall Sports Preview edition included in this week’s Fincastle Herald.
