The Lord Botetourt girls opened a two-game lead over Franklin County in Blue Ridge District soccer when the Cavaliers swept the Eagles in two games last week. The LB boys also played Franklin County twice and tied both games.
LB and Franklin were tied atop the BRD girls’ standings when the two met for the first time last Tuesday, April 23. That game was in Rocky Mount and Emma Rice scored four goals in a 6-3 win. Cailey Petrauskas and Katherine Woodward had one goal each while Bria Harvey and Janey Farrar had two assists each.
On Friday the same two played in Daleville and this time LB won 7-2 as Rice scored four more goals and added two assists, giving her eight goals against the Eagles in the span of four days. Harvey had a goal and three assists Friday while Farrar and Ella Fletcher also hit the net.
With the two wins the Cavaliers improved to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in the district, two games ahead of second place Franklin County.
The boys also played Franklin twice and came out with a Mexican standoff on both occasions. The two battled to a 1-1 tie in Daleville, and then a 2-2 tie in Rocky Mount. In between the Cavs played at Christiansburg and lost 5-0 in a non-district match. LB is now 3-7-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the district.
Both teams were scheduled to play Staunton River on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication. They’ll meet William Byrd on Friday with the girls at home and the boys in Vinton.
