The Lord Botetourt swim teams competed in the VHSL State Class 3 Championship Meet in Christiansburg last Thursday, Feb. 25. Out of 16 events swum, 13 resulted in new personal records with over 15 seconds dropped as a team.
Monticello won the girls team title while the LB girls were sixth. In the boys meet Western Albemarle won the state championship and the LB boys took 15th.
All six of the Cavalier girls medaled in at least one race, with all three relays placing in the top eight. Angelina Zeidan and Layne Jones placed in the top eight in individual events, and three new school records were set. The girls medley relay of Jones, Katie Cross, Zeidan, and Madelynn Sprouse placed 7th and set a new school record at 1:52.07. The 200 free relay of Emily Hansen, Cross, Sophie Rakes, and Sprouse finished 8th and set a new PR. The 400 free relay team of Rakes, Hansen, Jones, and Zeidan also finished 8th with a new PR.
In individual events, Zeidan finished 4th in the 50 free and set a new school record and a PR 24.18. She also medaled in the 50 fly with a fifth place finish and a new PR.
Layne Jones finished 5th in the stroke with a new PR and 9th in the 200 free with a new PR. Cross broke her own school record in the 100 breast with a 1:10.31 tenth place finish. She also swam a PR in the 200 IM where she finished 13th. Sprouse swam a PR in the 100 breast as well, finishing 13th.
All three boys relays teams set new PRs with the 200 medley relay team of Cooper Dehr, Griffin Davidson, Jacob Hodnett, and James Lively placing 12th; the 200 free relay team of Hunter Dillon, Davidson, Hodnett and Lively placing 11th ; and the 400 free relay team of Hodnett, Davidson, Lively, and Dehr placing 10th.
In individual competition, Dehr swam a PR in the 200 free, finishing 12th, and he finished 10th in the 100 free. Lively finished 12th in the 50 free.
Collectively, this team set four new school records this season, including Dehr’s record in the 100 free from the Regional Meet.
The James River swimmers will be at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Saturday to compete in the Class 1&2 meet, wrapping up the high school swim season.
