The Lord Botetourt girls’ basketball team won three games in Tennessee over the holiday break to improve to 9-0 on the season. LB had a big time in Gatlinburg, winning the Yellow Bracket in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic on December 19-21. Botetourt won all three games, and in Saturday’s championship game Renee Favaro earned her 100th win at LB in just her sixth year as head coach.

The Cavaliers opened with a 73-46 win over Station Camp of Tennessee. Madilyn Winterton scored a career high 39 points, shooting 75 percent from the floor, and had 19 in the third quarter as LB pulled away. Maddie Caron added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Abby Kingery also added 12 points.

On Friday the Cavaliers beat Jackson County of Kentucky, 68-47. Caron had 21 points, Winterton had 18 and Maggie Hoover scored 10.

That put the Cavaliers in the championship game against Lafayette of Kentucky on Saturday, and the Cavaliers dominated in a 64-35 win. It was a team effort as four Cavaliers scored in double figures, Winterton with 20, Caron with 15, Hoover with 14 and Alicia Holmes with 10 points.

Over the course of three games, Winterton shot 67 percent from the floor and averaged 26 points per game. Caron averaged 16 points and nine rebounds, Hoover averaged 10 points and Abby Kingery contributed seven points and five assists per game.

“It was a great week,” said Favaro. “Off the court the girls had a great time exploring downtown Gatlinburg, riding coasters at Dollywood, shopping at the outlets, and enjoying all the lights and holiday festivities together.”

The girls were scheduled to wrap up their 2024 schedule at Abingdon on Saturday, December 28, but results were too late for early New Year’s deadlines. Then, on January 7, the Cavaliers open their Blue Ridge District schedule at home against Staunton River. It will be a big one, as both teams were 9-0 at press time.
