The Lord Botetourt girls avenged one of their two season losses in basketball when they defeated Staunton River in Moneta Monday. With the win, LB improved to 17-2 overall and the Eagles are also 17-2 with the loss.

The Cavaliers were scheduled to return to the floor Tuesday to take on William Fleming, the top team in the district. Tuesday’s results were too late for publication, but the Colonels went into that one 16-2 overall and 6-0 in district games.

Staunton River edged LB the first time around, 45-43, but on Monday it was all Cavaliers. Botetourt picked up the pace and raced to an impressive 52-34 win over a strong Eagles team.

“We sped them up and played hard from start to finish,” said LB coach Renee Favaro. “Proud of their grit and just playing the game the right way.”

Madilyn Winterton had 22 points, 11 steals and eight rebounds for a near triple-double.  Maddie Caron had 17 points and eight boards and Abby Kingery scored eight and played great defense.

Monday’s win was the third in six days for the Cavs. Last Wednesday, the girls hosted Class 4 E.C. Glass and took a 65-19 win. LB scored 29 points off turnovers and shot 43 percent from beyond the three-point line. Winterton scored 24 points with 11 steals and seven assists, Caron scored 17 with eight boards and three blocks and Maggie Hoover rounded out the double-figure scoring with a dozen points.

On Friday, the girls played host to William Byrd and won 59-27 in a Blue Ridge District game. Botetourt forced 27 turnovers and committed just five. Caron led the team with 19 points and Botetourt got a career-high 11 from Jaiden Dann and nine points from Reagan Meade, who was three-for-three from distance. The girls stepped up as starter Alicia Holmes recently tore her ACL and is out for the season.

After Tuesday’s game at Fleming, the Cavaliers are at Northside Friday and home to Franklin County next Tuesday.
