The James River volleyball team works out at the school with the 2025 season closing in. The Knights will participate in a jamboree at Liberty High this Saturday.
The Lord Botetourt football team practices in preparation for their August 23 opener. LB will scrimmage Dobyns-Bennett High at Emory & Henry University on Thursday.

The Lord Botetourt and James River High School football teams will both have scrimmages this week as the football season nears. The Cavaliers will be at Emory & Henry University on Thursday and the Knights are at Craig County Friday.

Lord Botetourt had a scrimmage last Saturday morning at Hampden-Sydney College against New Kent High School. The Cavaliers scored four times and didn’t let the Trojans into the end zone in the scrimmage.

“It was a little sloppy but it was okay,” said LB coach Jamie Harless. “We had four two-way starters out.”

The Cavaliers will take on Dobyns-Bennett High from Tennessee this Thursday at the Emory & Henry University field. It will be a good test for the Cavaliers as Dobyns-Bennett is typically one of the top high schools in Tennessee.

The Cavaliers will open the season on Saturday, August 23, against Rye Cove High in another trip to Emory & Henry. The game is a week earlier than other Virginia High School League state teams as LB had a tough time finding a 10th game before matching up with Rye Cove.

James River will have their first scrimmage on Friday in New Castle as the Knights go against Craig County High at Mitchell Field beginning at 6 p.m. River will be at Nelson County next Friday, August 22, then open at Auburn on August 29.

In volleyball, Lord Botetourt was set to scrimmage Brookville on Tuesday of this week, followed by a home scrimmage next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Cavaliers open at Abingdon on August 26.

James River will participate in a volleyball jamboree this Saturday in Bedford, hosted by Liberty High. The Knights will host Rockbridge County for a scrimmage next Tuesday at 7 p.m., then open on August 26 at home against Liberty.
