The Lord Botetourt softball team will host defending state champion William Byrd in a big Blue Ridge District game on Friday.
The Terriers are back on top in the Blue Ridge District with a 6-1 overall record. Botetourt is 2-3 overall after losing to Franklin County last week, 6-1, in Daleville. The Cavaliers also had a game with Northside postponed due to Covid protocols.
Against Franklin, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, then added a run in the second and two more in the third. The Cavaliers scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth when Maddie Carroll knocked in Hailey Deter.
“We are struggling right now to get our lead-off batters on to be able to create something on offense,” said LB coach Cheryl Shockley. “We’ve stranded our runners at second and third way too often.”
Carroll had two hits for LB while Deter, Audrey Butler and Makena Shupe had one each. Rhyann Jones pitched the entire game and took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out seven.
“The team worked hard in practice this week to continue to build confidence and sharpen their approach at the plate,” said Shockley. “These young ladies are very resilient with what they have had to endure over the last year and I really look forward to seeing their progress as we go through the second half of the season.”
