Both the Lord Botetourt boys and girls split their first two tennis matches to open the season.

The boys opened with Staunton River last Friday and took a 9-0 win. Tyler Meade is playing number one for LB, followed by a ladder of Blake Lancaster, Case Deaner, Ridge Radtke, James Lively and Jackson Wolfe. All are underclassmen.

“We have a very young team led by sophomore Tyler Meade,” said coach Blake Johnson. “Young, but very eager to face great competition this year and continue to gain needed experience.”

The boys lost their Monday match at Franklin County, 6-3.

The girls had much the same result as they beat William Byrd in Vinton to open the season, 9-0, then also lost to Franklin by a 6-3 score.

At Byrd the weather dictated the teams play eight-game sets and LB was able to sweep the results. Olivia Turner and Rylee White rallied to win a seven point tie-breaker, 7-4, at number two doubles.

“The match against Franklin was closer than it appears,” said coach Shannon Quinn. “Most of the singles matches were closer than they seem with a lot of deuce points.”

White won at number six singles and the number one doubles team of Leah Germain and Jordan Coffey came off the court with the second win for LB at 8-5. Third doubles Delaney Dennis and Anna Frittman sealed the third win with a close match at 8-6.

The girls are back in action Thursday against Northside at Walrond Park. On Friday both teams play at William Fleming.
