When the Lord Botetourt volleyball team hosts Staunton River on Thursday night, it will be a special “Spike Out Kids Cancer Night” to benefit the “Fighting Kids Cancer” organization.
There will be special events and games to go along with matches between the Cavalier and Golden Eagle jayvee teams at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity teams to follow. T-shirts will be sold for $15 with proceeds going to the Life Ring Foundation. There will also be a silent auction and 50-50 raffle with the money going directing to the family of Dalton Close, who is battling the disease. Fan contests will be held between games, including a student-fan challenge.
The varsity match should be a good one with two evenly matched teams. Both opened Blue Ridge District play on Tuesday, Staunton River with a 4-3 non-district mark and LB at 3-3 pending Tuesday’s game at Franklin County.
Prior to Tuesday’s games the Cavaliers had not played since hosting Carroll County on September 15. Botetourt continues district play next week with a match against William Byrd in Vinton on Tuesday and a home match with William Fleming on October 2.
“We are excited to start district play this week,” said coach Samantha Wilkins. “We are looking forward to getting back into play after a full week off of matches. Franklin County always has a strong program and we are expecting a competitive match.”
