Lord Botetourt will host the Region 3D baseball semifinals and finals next week, and the host Cavaliers are hoping to be included. The semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday of next week and the championship is Thursday, May 30, at 6 p.m. in Daleville.
Botetourt is the sixth seed in the eight-team tournament, opening with a game at third-seeded Tunstall on Thursday of this week. If the Cavaliers can pull off a win they would meet the winner of a first round game between Christiansburg and Northside at 7 p.m. next Tuesday at LB. However, Tunstall provides a challenge. The Trojans are 19-4 and Piedmont District champs.
“They’re a solid all-around team,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “They’re normally good, and this year is no exception.”
Smith will start Brae Farrell on the mound Thursday. Last Thursday in Vinton Farrell started in the Blue Ridge District tournament semifinal game as Botetourt dropped a 4-3 game to Staunton River. Botetourt had just four hits, the big blow a two-run homer by Meade Mayo.
“We couldn’t get the clutch hit,” said Smith. “We had two on with just one out in the fifth and sixth and couldn’t get the big hit when we needed it.”
The loss dropped LB to 12-8 on the season.
