Lord Botetourt High School will induct four new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame this week, then present them at halftime of the home football game with William Byrd on Friday night. The Class of 2024 includes Jeff Cole, Tracey Driscoll, Justin Goode and Michael Jones.
Cole graduated from Lord Botetourt in 1975 and was actively involved in sports. He played football and ran track throughout his high school years. In football, he achieved several accolades, including being the first player to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season and over 200 yards in a single game. He was also named the school’s Most Valuable Player for the 1974 football season and captained the football team in his senior year.
Additionally, Cole received the Cavalier award as the Male Athlete of the Year for 1975 and was named to the top 50 football players in the first 50 years of the school.
In track, Jeff set new school records in the 880, mile, and 2-mile in outdoor track, as well as in the 1,000 in indoor track during his senior year. He achieved notable rankings in various track events, including first in the Blue Ridge District, second in the region, and third in the state in the 880, and first in the district and second in the state in the 1,000 in indoor track. He also won the 880 at both the Buena Vista and Radford Relays and set meet records for the Cosmopolitan Relay Track Meet in the 880. Jeff was the No. 1 runner in the Timesland in the 880 and also participated in AAU track during his summers.
Following his graduation, Jeff worked for 36 years at Steel Dynamics, previously Roanoke Electric Steel. He and his wife, Beverly, and they have a stepdaughter and three grandchildren.
Driscoll began her career in education and athletic training during the 1992-1993 school year, teaching Health and Physical Education. During this time she became the first athletic trainer at Liberty High School.
In 1993 Tracey was hired at Salem High School to teach Health and PE, coach varsity girls soccer and she took on the role of junior varsity girls basketball coach, serving in that capacity for four years before becoming the varsity girls coach from 1997 to 2007. Over her 14 years at Salem High School Tracey was one of three athletic trainers.
In 2007 she transitioned to Lord Botetourt High School where she taught sports medicine and served as the athletic trainer for 17 years. Throughout this time, LBHS and the community evolved together, allowing her to build many meaningful relationships that facilitated the best care for the LBHS student-athletes. Tracey also worked closely with local physical therapists, chiropractors and Carilion Orthopedics. Together, funds were raised to implement electronic medical record technology (ATGenius) and SWAY concussion baselining to enhance student-athlete safety.
In June 2023, Tracey and Lord Botetourt High School collaborated with Compress and Shock to secure an AED for the softball facility.
Throughout her tenure, Tracey also worked closely with Roanoke College and Hollins University, serving as a preceptor for 22 college students entering allied health fields. During her 17-year tenure, the development of the Athletic Training Student Assistant (ATSA) program has mentored over 25 LBHS students. In October of 2023 Driscoll was the recipient of the Sabre award.
Goode, a 2014 graduate, had an outstanding high school basketball career, earning numerous accolades and awards throughout his time on the court. His sophomore year saw him achieve 2nd Team All-Region, 1st Team All-District, and recognition on the Sizzling Sophomore All-Timesland team.
In his junior year, Justin continued to excel, earning 2nd Team All-State, 1st Team All-Region, 1st Team All-District, and a spot on the Kiwanis All-Star Team, as well as 1st Team All-Timesland.
During his senior year, Justin’s talent and hard work reached new heights, resulting in an impressive list of accomplishments. He was named 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-West Region, 1st Team All-Conference 31, 1st Team All-District, and secured a spot on the Kiwanis All-Star Team. He was honored with several prestigious titles, including VHSCA 3A State Player of the Year, VHSL 3A 1st Team All-State, West Region Player of the Year, Conference 31 Player of the Year, District Player of the Year, and Kiwanis Metro Player of the Year. Justin also earned 1st Team All-Timesland and became Lord Botetourt’s all-time leading scorer with an impressive 1,498 points.
His statistics over the seasons speak for themselves: 405 points, 90 made free throws out of 95 attempts for 94.7%, and 87 assists in 2011-2012; 555 points, 170 made free throws out of 182 attempts for 93.4%, and 83 assists in 2012-2013; and 538 points, 141 made free throws out of 154 attempts for 91.6%, and 113 assists in 2013-2014, totaling 1,498 points, 401 made free throws out of 431 attempts for a 93.0% success rate, and 283 assists over his entire high school career.
After high school, Justin continued his basketball journey by playing a postgraduate year at Hargrave Military Academy before moving on to play at Rutgers University from 2015 to 2017. In 2020, he graduated from Liberty University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management.
Jones completed his LBHS athletic journey from 2008 to 2012. In high school he made history as the first freshman to start varsity football in 10-15 years.
Mike’s wrestling career was a significant part of his high school years. He achieved an impressive record each year, including 37-0 with 32 pins during his senior year, setting a new record of 153-21.
Mike excelled in various local tournaments, winning titles such as Titan Toughman and Big Orange and securing victories in the Blue Ridge District and Region 3 championships. At the state level, Mike showed consistent improvement and became a VHSL state champion during his senior year.
His achievements also extended to the national level, where he qualified for the prestigious Super 32 tournament. Jones received several awards, including the Jackie Toney Scholarship Award, Kyle Smith Unsung Hero Award and the Stan Parker Memorial Scholarship. He was recognized as the Roanoke Valley Wrestler of the Year in 2012 and received the LB Senior Athletic Award.
Additionally, Mike held the title of Blue Ridge District Wrestler of the Year and Region 3 Wrestler of the Year during both his junior and senior years.
