Leslie L. Vaughn, formerly Martha Carolyn Weaver, passed unexpectedly on August 12, 2021 at her home in Norfolk, Va.
Leslie was born and raised in Eagle Rock. She was a graduate of James River High School in Buchanan in 1970 and obtained her post-secondary education at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Leslie worked as an elementary school teacher at Jane H. Bryan and Merrimack Elementary Schools in Hampton, Va., and retired from Ingleside Elementary School in Norfolk, Va., in 2014, where she was also named Teacher of the Year.
In her retirement, Leslie was involved in her local civic league, was an avid pickleball player and quilter and loved to spend time with her family. Leslie was exceptionally close to her grandchildren. She was an enthusiastic reader and had an eagerness to continue learning. Her happy place was the beach.
Leslie was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Lucy Vaughn. She is survived by her partner, Gordy Hellenbrand; her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Jonathan Ocasio of Chesapeake, Va.; her son, Alexander Weaver of Essex County, N.J.; her six grandchildren, Celeste Dodson, Damon Wallace, Olivia Ocasio, Jonathan Ocasio Jr, Benjamin Weaver, and Havana Rose Weaver; her three sisters, Susan Kiser, Rebecca Stull, and Laura Lucas; six nieces and nephews and one-great niece; as well as numerous cousins.
Her kindness, generosity, and infectious laugh will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2021, in the Parklawn Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, Va. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, 800 Tidewater Dr., Norfolk, Va. 23504.
