Everyone thinking alike would be dangerous
Editor:
Our country was founded on the free exchange of ideas. However, we’ve increasingly lost that freedom from colleges and universities refusing to allow conservative speakers (Liberty University an exception) to Boris Bordetsky (Editor needs to consider responsibility to community, January 20, 2021) and Charlie Finn (Reader says Buchanan’s letter was inflammatory, January 20, 2021) who both call for you, editor, to censor and cancel Tim Buchanan’s right to express his opinions in an open and public forum (Other views of what happened at the Capitol, January 13, 2021and America’s election system is a mess — clean it up, December 23, 2020).
The Fincastle Herald offers an important opportunity to read someone’s opposing ideas, hopefully presented with truth and without anger or name calling. Your ideas may grow my perspective, open my eyes, or even change my mind. Voltaire said, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
If we all think alike, as the Democrats are now talking of reprogramming conservatives, what a dangerous world this would be, smelling of George Orwell’s 1984. God help us.
