Writer questions president’s, politicians’ stance on economy, unemployment, guns
Our president tells us that our economy is “the greatest economy in the world.” However, on Route 11, north of Troutville, there is a sign posted with the price of regular gas as $2.99 per gallon. The station at which the sign is posted closed about a year ago. As of June 16, 2022, the gas stations at the Interstate 81 exit to Buchanan post their regular gas prices as $4.89 per gallon. In my mind, that is inflation, not economic growth.
President Biden says unemployment is at an all-time low of about 3 percent. Then why are many of our favorite businesses in Roanoke and surrounding area posting apologetic signs asking for patience due to lack of personnel and even closing for the same reason? Most every business I notice has help wanted signs in their windows or signs offering above minimum wages. Employment is at an all-time low.
Our politicians are seriously discussing further gun regulation and laws to control the purchase and use of guns, along with the ability to sue the manufacturer of the gun used in a crime. As a child said in response to a teacher who told the class that guns kill people, his pencil failed the test. Should he then sue the maker of the pencil for failing his test? Also, should I be able to sue the manufacturer of the train engine that hit my dog?
Thanks to our Virginia General Assembly there is some movement to open Catawba Hospital for addiction and mental health help. There is hope for positive change if they carry it through.
