The outdoor pavilion at historic Santillane in Fincastle will be the setting for an informational, fun event to help fund the Virginia Lewis & Clark Legacy Trail’s Signage Program from 6:30-8:30 pm. on Saturday, Sept. 18.
Specifically, signage is needed at Lewis & Clark historic sites, locations, and along various routes of the trail. The VLCLT estimates that for the remainder of 2021, and during the years 2022-2023, approximately 20-30 Lewis & Clark interpretive and other signs will be needed in trail localities, including Botetourt County.
Event attendees will enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, a variety of beverages, exhibits of Lewis & Clark historic sites, as well as samples of sign designs that will be used.
Highlighting the event will be guest speaker Betsy Merritt, Deputy General Counsel, National Trust for Historic Preservation. Merritt has served as legal counsel for the National Trust’s legal advocacy program for the past 25 years, having represented the organization in nearly 200 cases in state and federal courts.
She also enjoys working with local governments when faced with preservation-sensitive decisions and will be available to meet and address questions by individuals and groups on Monday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m., following Saturday night’s event. This activity will take place in the auditorium of Botetourt County Administration Offices at Greenfield, 57 S. Center Drive, Daleville.
Admission for the Saturday event are $50/individual and $100/couple. Attendees can complete the reservation form shown below or can download it from the VLCLT’s website at
