Health and Wellness Fair May 7
Let’s face it, it’s been a really rough two years. COVID-19 has taken a toll on our physical and mental health and wellness, and as we climb out the other side, we could all use a reset with some TLC.
You’re invited to a Health and Wellness Fair, a special event to promote health, wellness, and mindfulness for a happier and healthier community. It will be held on Saturday, May 7, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., in the parking lot outside the Fincastle Library and Health Department. We have an amazing lineup of community partners, demos, and workshops that you won’t want to miss!
Nature can be incredibly healing. Chat with Botetourt County’s Parks and Recreation staff to learn about the great places to visit right here at home (you may learn about some hidden gems even lifelong residents don’t know about!), hear about their exciting plans for the future, and offer your ideas and feedback.
Local Master Gardeners will be on hand to discuss how gardening can benefit your health and be a source of stress relief. They can also answer your gardening questions.
Mountain Castles Soil & Water Conservation District will also be there to talk about the long-term health effects of not taking care of our water and soil, and how you can help conserve and clean up our natural resources for everyone’s safety and benefit.
Struggling with health issues? Get a free sunscreen sample, diabetes risk assessment, and/or blood pressure screening from Carilion. Health professionals from Carilion and the Virginia Department of Health will be on hand to discuss community health needs, vaccines, COVID, and more health-related topics.
Healthy movement is vital to our overall well being. The YMCA and Carilion Wellness (the BAC) will offer free fitness assessments, discuss the benefits of exercise, and give you ideas for types of exercise you might actually enjoy.
Feeling stressed? Mental and emotional strain takes a serious toll on our physical health. Attend a 30-minute workshop about trauma – what it is, how it affects your body and mind, and how to heal.
Another 30-minute workshop teaches you the basics of meditation, a way to quiet your mind and feel calm even in the midst of crisis. If you’re the type of person who manages stress better if your hands are busy, attend a one-hour virtual demo with nationally famous children’s author Bob Shea, who will show you how to use drawing as a relaxation tool.
Money can be a huge stressor in our lives. Learn how to avoid “free weight loss trial” offer scams and how to recover if you fall victim. The Roanoke Financial Empowerment Center will be there to answer questions and share resources about dealing with financial stress.
We hope to see you on Saturday, May 7 at the Fincastle Library for a time of health and healing. In the meantime, take care of yourself!
