It seems like just yesterday the children and teachers were counting down the last few days of the school year and we were counting down the days until our Summer Learning Challenge kickoff. Fast forward 10 weeks and it is hard to believe that the dog days of Summer are almost over, and school will be back in session shortly.
While things were not 100% back to normal, we hope that with our Reading Colors Your World Summer Learning Challenge we were able to bring some happiness and color to your home, a sense of adventure and curiosity to your life and a love of learning to your world.
Our challenge centered around enhancing the lives of participants by adding color through literature, art, creative play and the exploration of diverse ideas and cultures. By reading, writing reviews and completing activities, participants were able to earn digital raffle tickets to use towards our grand prizes. These incentives were chosen because they will continue to nourish the curious/adventurous spirit and mind our challenge aims to promote long after it is over.

A few weeks ago, the library challenged the readers of this column to help us reach our goal of 500,000 minutes read over the summer and 100% reader participation. We are so happy to announce that from June 7- July 30 participants read 654,307 minutes with 92% of them actively reading! They completed 3,078 activities, wrote 565 reviews and earned 4,018 badges. Way to go BoCo!
We want to thank everyone who collaborated with us and participated in the Reading Colors Your World Summer Learning Challenge to make this year such a success. We could not have done it without the support of Botetourt County Schools, the Board of Supervisors, the Friends of the Library, and the parents and caregivers who dedicate their time to make sure the children of this community have every opportunity available to them.
