It’s hard to believe how fast the summer is flying by! We’re already at the halfway point for the Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge, but it’s not too late to participate. You can join in the fun anytime between now and July 24.
As noted in a previous Library Buzz, the 2020 Challenge includes unique features that make it different from any other Summer Reading Challenge we’ve done before. First, you can sign up, log reading, track activities, earn badges and submit raffle tickets for prizes online at botetourtva.beanstack.org. Given the unpredictable coronavirus environment lately, we wanted to provide a way to interact that didn’t require going to a physical library location. You can even install the Beanstack app on your smartphone and take the Summer Reading Challenge wherever you go!
In addition, we’re encouraging everyone to take their learning beyond reading. We believe that reading is very important, and it’s still the main attraction and biggest part of the challenge. But reading isn’t the only way to learn and have fun. Our brains are closely tied with and influenced by physical movement – the more we move, the better we can think. That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to get outside or try some hands-on activities, like trying out the new Story Walk at the Greenfield Sports Complex, taking a hike or looking for treasure by geocaching.
Of course, not everyone can get out and about all the time, and it’s been a rather rainy summer so far. Never fear, we have indoor activities as well. Reading is an obvious choice, but you can also try your hand at a “Stranger Things”-themed digital escape room. Give it a try – how quickly can you get out?
We also encourage you to use the Libraries’ digital resources for fun learning. You can earn your Digital Citizen badge by exploring these resources, including making crafts featured in CreativeBug, diving into a new language with Rocket Languages, and taking an online course through Universal Class. And don’t forget to check out ebooks on the Libby app, and never be stuck without something to read again!
Let’s not forget reading, which is the primary reason we host a Challenge every year. Read for 1, 5 and 10 hours (or even more!) and earn digital badges and raffle tickets toward your favorite prizes.
Let’s talk about those prizes. In addition to smaller prizes for achieving specific milestones, you can also put your earned raffle tickets toward the prize of your choice. Prize choices include bikes, VR headset, digital watch and STEM building kit for kids; numerous gift cards, GoPro camera, VR headset, gaming headphones and bike for teens; and gift cards, potter, GoPro Camera, YMCA membership and kayak for adults.
The Summer Reading Challenge is for all ages, from 0-150. If you’re not comfortable signing up online, give us a call and we’ll be glad to sign you up over the phone. It’s not too late to join the fun, so jump right in today!
