Easter Drive-Thru Eggstravaganza
What memories does the word “Easter” bring to you? Mine are mixed. In Vermont where I grew up, I never knew if Easter would involve admiring sprigs of green grass and flowers or a day building snowmen in the back yard.
The weather in Virginia seems to be a more predictably spring-like, and it’s a great time to enjoy the fresh air before the pollen makes you remember why wearing masks isn’t such a bad deal after all. Fortunately, we’ve got the perfect activity for you.
Botetourt County Parks & Recreation has planned an exciting Easter Drive-Thru Eggstravaganza – and the Libraries will be there, too! The event happens on Saturday, April 3, 2-4 p.m. at the Botetourt Sports Complex. The drive-thru aspects make it safe for everyone to participate, it’s doable even in the rain, and it’s easy to fit into any other scheduled family fun you have going on that day. Simply drive up and enjoy the special treats handed out by a wide variety of county departments and local organizations. The Libraries will have a special activity bag (with treats, of course!) to hand out – but we have limited quantities of that unique package, so make sure you come early!
So, what if Easter weekend is a rainy one? You can still come to the Eggstravaganza, but you may feel like staying home and dry the rest of the day. Pick up some books and movies to enjoy over the weekend. If you want something Easter-themed (religious or simply fun), we’ve got you covered.
In the online catalog at RVL.info, search for “Easter.” You can use the filters in the left-hand column to narrow down your results. For example, I narrowed mine to “Easter – Juvenile fiction” to see a long list of children’s books about the Easter holiday (almost 100 titles!). Kids can enjoy Easter stories with their favorite characters, like Clifford, Little Critter, Max, Pooh, Corduroy, the Berenstain Bears and more. From Easter egg hunts to grumpy Easter bunnies, there’s a story the whole family will enjoy reading aloud together.
If you’d rather watch a movie, narrow the results down to “movie.” Most of them are children’s DVDs, but not all. Try the classic Fred Astaire movie Easter Parade. Or watch the Easter Under Wraps Hallmark romance (beware: it features a chocolate factory and you WILL have massive cravings if you watch this!). Into comedy? Try The Dog Who Saved Easter, where you’ll discover what good-humored mayhem can happen if you leave your pup in doggie daycare while you head out on an Easter vacation cruise.
Whatever else you do, take some time out this Easter to spend some time with family – even if it’s over the phone. It’s a holiday focused on fresh and hopeful beginnings, just like the spring weather that’s surrounding us right now. The days are growing longer and brighter. Let’s take a moment to connect and encourage the people most precious to us this holiday weekend.
