The Lord Botetourt boys and girls both qualified for the state Class 3 cross country meet with third place finishes in the Region 3D meet last week. The regional was held at Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol, Va.

Both races saw the same three teams finish in the top three, qualifying for the state meet. Abingdon won both the girls and boys titles with Christiansburg second in both races and LB in third. The Northside girls and Cave Spring boys were fourth, missing out on the state as a team.

In the girls race, LB’s Sydney Vokus took fifth place overall with a time of 19:38. Makaleigh Jessee of Abingdon won the race in 18:60.

Vokus and two other Cavaliers earned All-Region honors by finishing in the top 15. Erna Dietrich was 12th in 20:13 and Ella Johnston was 14th in 20:42. Also scoring for LB were Hatlyn Haggerty in 29th and Karley Burks in 30th place.

In the boys race, Isaac Thiessen of Abingdon was the individual winner in 15:26 as Abingdon took three of the top four spots. Evan Gates of LB was fifth in 16:27, and Cole Stelter of the Cavaliers also earned All-Region honors with a 12th place finish in 17:19. Also scoring were Carter Hudson in 18th, Rye Jackson in 23rd and Aiden Dietrich in 26th.

“They all ran very well and made a great showing at the race,” said LB coach Elizabeth Smith.

The state Class 3 meet will be at Green Hill Park in west Roanoke County this Saturday. The Class 3 girls will run at 11:45 a.m., followed by the Class 3 boys at 12:30 p.m.
