The Lord Botetourt girls basketball team got a season with high hopes off to a great start last week, winning three games in convincing fashion. LB beat Patrick Henry, Jefferson Forest and Cave Spring in a span of four days.
“It was a great week where we saw contribution from everyone on the roster,” said coach Renee Favaro. “Any time you can open up with a 3-0 week, it’s a nice start to the season. We shot the ball exceptionally well and I hope we can continue to do that and makes ourselves tough to guard in any defense.”
Botetourt opened the season at Class 5 Patrick Henry and took a 53-43 win behind a career-high 18 points by Gracie Hufford. Taylor Orange had 11 and Madilyn Winterton had 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. LB held the Patriots to four points in the third quarter.
“This was a big win for us against one of the best teams in the Roanoke Valley,” said Favaro. “Their point guard is already signed D1 with Murray State and they have some other players on D1 coaches’ radar as well. Our defense and effort made a huge difference in this game.”
The girls were on the road again Thursday in Forest and took a 75-48 win over Class 4 Jefferson Forest. Ainsley Anderson led the team with 15 points and five assists, Orange had 14 points and Winterton added 10. Grayson Alfano hit three threes and all 11 girls on the team scored as the Cavs shot 52 percent as a team.
On Friday the girls had their home opener against Cave Spring and took a 74-31 win. Again, all 11 Cavaliers made the scoresheet led by Winterton with 15, and she also had six steals and four assists. Hufford had 10 points and Anderson dished out eight assists.
The Cavaliers had a Tuesday game at Blacksburg this week but results were too late for publication. This Saturday they host Abingdon with a 5 p.m. tip-off scheduled.
