The Lord Botetourt girls will take on their top two basketball rivals for Blue Ridge District supremacy this week when they play host to William Fleming on Tuesday, then travel to Franklin County on Friday.
Coming into the week Fleming led the BRD with a 7-0 district mark and a 14-4 overall record. LB and Franklin were tied for second at 5-2 in the BRD with Botetourt holding a 13-5 overall record and Franklin coming into the week at 11-8. LB lost to both the first time around, 50-44 at Fleming and 48-44 to Franklin in Daleville, so the Cavaliers will be trying to turn things around this week.
Botetourt had little trouble with two district opponents last week as they breezed by William Byrd and Northside. They played Byrd in Daleville and took a 64-14 win over the Terriers in a game that saw everyone play double figure minutes except for Bry Orange, who was injured at the end of the first half with a patella dislocation.
“Bry is one of those glue kids for us who is a joy to coach and adored by her teammates,” said LB coach Renee Favaro. “Although her basketball season is likely over, we are holding out hope for her to be able to take the softball field in the spring.”
Taylor Orange led the Cavs with 23 points while Madilyn Winteron had 17 points, 10 steals and six assists. Abby Kingery had nine points. Botetourt forced a season-high 43 turnovers and captured a season-high 32 steals, which led to 55 of the 64 points.
On Friday at Northside the Cavaliers took a 78-40 win as Winterton scored 22 points on eight for 12 shooting from the floor to go with eight rebounds. Taylor Orange had 20 points and Ainsley Anderson added her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 assists to go with 7 rebounds. Gracie Huffard recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds. All eight players dressed scored a bucket as LB shot 52 percent from the floor.
Next week the Cavs will wrap up the regular season with a game at Staunton River on Tuesday and a home game with Patrick Henry on Wednesday, February 8.
