Silas Miller is one of three returning starters for the James River golf team.

It will only get warmer for the high school golfers as they play in the spring instead of the fall. Both Lord Botetourt and James River are scheduled to open with matches this week.

Lord Botetourt will open today with a Blue Ridge District “mini-match” at the Westlake Country Club. The Cavaliers return four of six from last year’s Region 3D championship team, Samir Davidov, Ashton Harper, Kaitlyn Mosdell and Jake Koffman.

Trey Sharp played in some matches last year and returns to battle for a starting spot, and Dylan Salvi is a new golfer who should help the team immediately. A junior, Dylan has put up good numbers in practice.

Other newcomers to the team are 10th graders Cadyn Bowles, Hunter Duncan, and Xavier Shelton, junior Cole Leavens and senior Tyler Burdette.

James River was scheduled to open Monday but that was postponed due to inclement weather, so now the Knights will open on Thursday at Old Mill in Carroll County.

Returning starters for River include Ryan Steger, Silas Miller and Joey Schroeder. Everett Bowman, Dalton Hall and Jake Braun round out the six starters for River’s opening match.

“This season is going to be an exciting season and I look forward to great things from not only these six, but the rest of the team,” said River coach Donna Cox. “It will be a very competitive season among my golfers.  I have 10 strong golfers that will compete each week for a starting position.”
