Memorial Day was a memorable one for the Lord Botetourt soccer teams as the boys and girls both won Region 3D quarterfinal games over Northside and moved on to region semifinal games tonight.
The boys defeated the Vikings, 2-1, after playing to a scoreless first half. Northside took a 1-0 lead shortly after intermission but LB found some momentum after the goal and Dylan Salvi fought for the ball inside box to find the back of the net to knot it at 1-1.
Moments later, another ball was played in the box and Zach Ruhlman took a shot that deflected off his teammate to take the lead. The Cavalier defense did the rest as LB improved to 14-3-2 overall.
The girls also played Northside and took a 5-1 win in Daleville Monday. Ava Brumfield led the offense for the Cavaliers as they improved their record to 17-2 overall with a 13-0 mark against district opponents.
The girls will be back home tonight, Wednesday, to play host to Christiansburg in a Region 3D semifinal game at 7 p.m. The winner advances to Friday’s championship game, and if LB wins tonight the Cavaliers will be home as the top seed in the region. Both regional finalists advance to state quarterfinal games next Tuesday.
The boys are also in action tonight, meeting Cave Spring on the Knights’ home pitch in a game scheduled for 6 p.m. Again, the winner advances to Friday’s region final and both finalists are in the state tournament.
